How Juvo Board Helps Your Studio Appeal to the Active Aging

May is National Older Americans Month. After working for many years with this population, I prefer the more current term “active aging” and am of the opinion we should rename this month National Active Aging Adult Month.

Why you should cater to the active aging

Baby boomers and seniors are the fastest growing demographic in America. Even more, they controlled 70 percent of the nation’s disposable income as of 2015. They also recognize the importance of maintaining health and are willing to pay a professional to help achieve and maintain well being. Studios and gyms that reach out to these potential clientele are wise since they value the services being offered.

As we age, our metabolism decreases as well as our amount of muscle, but it can be combated. The majority of clientele in my studio are over the age of 50. Of that segment, most are over 60 and quite a few are in their 80s. They remain disease-free, functional and independent. Moreover, they can participate in the activities that bring them joy with regular fitness, healthy eating and mindfulness.

How to accommodate the active aging

Our instructors at The Bodysmith, the studio I own and instruct at, do take some special considerations when choosing exercises and designing programs for this population. Such considerations include:

  • Range of motion
  • Balance
  • Cognition
  • Arthritis and other physical limitations
  • Osteoporosis
  • Posture
  • Fun and laughter

The Juvo Board is the perfect addition to any gym or studio for active aging group classes or individual sessions to help meet these considerations.

The benefits of Juvo Elevate and exercises for the active aging

Elevate brings the mat to them, aids in range of motion issues – especially for the knees, hips and ankles – and helps them work in seated exercises more comfortably.  It will also help them achieve a more neutral posture. The following exercises can help keep your active agers strong, mobile, and hopefully progress or keep them able to get down onto the floor and back up again safely and independently.

  • Squats
  • Lunges
  • Roll-ups
  • Spine Twist
  • Down Dog
  • Push-ups

The benefits of Juvo Balance and exercises for the active aging

Unlike a lot of other balance equipment on the market, the Juvo Board has a firm, wide surface to support users. It also has a barre to hold onto when stepping on and off or to aid in laying down or sitting on the Juvo Board. Try these exercises in Juvo Balance to help your active agers maintain balance and stability, work small stabilizer muscles, gain confidence, increase core work and have fun!

  • Bird Dog
  • Lunges holding onto barre
  • Squats to barre
  • Saw facing barre
  • Down Dog with barre
  • Hundreds with feet on the barre
